Body up. Hit something. Baseball. Okay. Golf ball. Hmm. Unnatural. Who invented this game anyway. The Scots. Figures. Cold country. Days are boring. What to do? Let’s see. . .we’ve got all this pasture land. . .
It began as a “gentlemen’s” game. Something to while away the hours. Probably an expanded version of the lawn game. . .crochet. Another game invented to take advantage of all that lawn area surrounding those big mansions. . .another thing to do with all that time. “Things are going well in the colonies.” Gossip and golf. Nothing really changes.
Hit the ball. Walk to the ball. Hit it again. Walk to the ball. Hit it as close to the tiny hole as possible. Putt it into the hole. So simple. Well. . .time adds things. Like the professional golfer. This guy took the ancient game and modernize it. Better clubs. Better balls. The golf course designer. The country club. A place where the elite meet to eat. . .and O yeah. . .play the game.
The average golf swing is pitiful. Awkward. Ugly looking. Just plain ugly. We won’t get into the putting stroke of the average player. Average player meaning something like 95% of all golfers. Problem: relentless conflict with the body. The body doesn’t like the old ancient golf swing developed over 300 years ago. Of course they weren’t trying to see how far they could smash the ball. These were gentlemen. And ladies. Mary. . .Queen of Scots. . .is said to have been the first woman to play the game. And she was awful. Took a hundred mulligan a round. And we’re talking 9 holes. 18 holes came later. She would have to take a nap after playing golf. In fact. . .a lot of people have to take naps after playing the game. Many get a massage. See the chiropractor. Pick up the prescription. Lay low.
THE MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE GOLF SWING
The major problem. . .note the word “major”. . .is getting the club into position to hit it. Forget the modern notion of “striking” it. Few golfers have a clue about how to “strike” the golf ball. Getting the club into position asks much of the body. Hands here. Legs here. Lean forward. Not too far. Stand straighter. Don’t stand so straight. Now. . .now. . . now. . .take the club away low and slow. Slower. A little faster. Wrist break. Not that much wrist break. A little more wrist break. Break your wrists sooner. Not so soon. Now at the top. . .shift your weight to the left (if you’re right-handed. . .to the right if you’re left-handed). . .as you move down and through the ball. O. . .and then up into a full follow through. Right?
A BETTER SWING CONCEPT FOR THE MODERN GAME
I began inventing the MONGOOSE GOLF SWING about 30 years ago. I began with the nemesis of the golf swing: THE TAKEAWAY. How in the hell can you rid of that monster? I tried all kinds of things. Then it dawned on me. . .just lift the damn club up to the spot from which you’re going to hit the ball. Lift. Hit. Lift. Hit. Then I began changing a few other things that my body didn’t like. The old swing and swat. The old side-to-side. Initiated by the takeaway. I learned how to shift my weight to the exact spot I need to have my body to cream the ball. And at 77. . .I can still strike the ball with all the authority I need to play the modern golf course. I learned how to shift my body slightly FORWARD. . .rather than to the side. The WRONG side.
