GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: $2,000 in Lessons Wasted! Here’s Why the 'GOOSE' Works

“What I’m going to teach you is a one-piece takeaway”. . .said the golf instructor.  “Your upper spine. . .lower spine. . .the ‘triangle’. . .and the club all move to right post. . .which is the right leg.”  Sound familiar?
So we watch the new golfer.  “Okay. . .try and hit one with this 8 iron.”  The golfer over exaggerates the whole “move to right post. . .”  “You moved too far to the right.  You’ve got to stay inside your right post. . .which is the right leg.  Try a couple a more.”  The golfer gets locked inside “the right leg” and can’t figure out how to get back over the ball. . .right.  Sound familiar?
The golfer gouges the ground.  Slices three straight shots off to the right. . .into the fence along the driving range.  “Don’t worry about the bad shots.  All the great golfers start out like this.”  Really?
"I told the cop I was learning how to play golf"

The golfer tries and tries and keeps hitting bad shots.  “One you’re over on the right. . .you’ve got to clear out the left side so you can come back around and make solid contact with the ball.”  The golfer hits 6 more bad shots.  Along with one near woof.  A clunker that went out about 25 yards.  “Next time you’re in we’ll take a look at those clubs.  They look a little short for you.  Maybe we lengthen the grips.”
WILL THE NIGHTMARE EVER END?

“I spent over $2,000 on lessons.  Then I bought about 5 or 6 books. . .Hogan’s. . . Wood’s. . .you know. . .and started from scratch.”  Do you still play.  No.  I gave it up 6 or 7 years ago.”  I see.  “I bought three different sets of clubs.  They did everything to them.  Then I slowly realized the equipment had almost nothing to do with it.”  Well. . .with the MONGOOSE GOLF SWING. . .you’ll be hitting decent shots in a hour.  Watch the video tutorial twice.  Learn how to separate your hands so your grip is firm.  You must be able to wield the club. . .like a swordsman wields a sword.  Firm grip equals better confidence. . .better execution. . .consistency.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Striking Vs Hitting a Golf Ball

Most golfers hit AT the golf ball.  Most do not know how to “STRIKE!!!” the ball.  Why?  Swing teachers start with what they call “the basics” of a golf swing.  Striking the ball is supposed to be learned. . . . . .later.  Unfortunately. . .that doesn’t happen.  Trying to catch the ball as you sweep the club by. . .it hitting AT the ball.  You can only strike the golf ball when you hit down on it.  Here’s what happens.

The ground is hard.  By learning to use the hard ground. . .tee box or fairway. . . when hitting down on the back of the golf ball. . .you slightly compress the ball. . . which causes it to decompress. . .thus flying off the tee or fairway as if. . .well. . . struck.  So why isn’t this common?  Why do so few golfers. . .perhaps one in a hundred. . .strike the ball?  Here’s why.
The conventional swing features what has been called “the takeaway.”  Right-handed golfers learn to slide their weight over to the right side while taking the club AWAY from the ball.  Getting back to that spot they had at address is not easy.  Even for the pros.  It takes a certain. . .rhythm to get the body back over the ball in the correct spot to apply force to the ball.  If you’re late. . .the face of the club is open. . .you slice the ball off to the right.  If you’re early. . .the ball is either pushed (typical) to the left. . .or as is also typical. . .you hook the ball over into the trees on the left (all of this is reversed if you’re left-handed).
SECRET OF STRIKING THE BALL

The secret of learning how to STRIKE!!! the golf ball is to hit down on it (as mentioned above).  With the MONGOOSE SWING TECHNIQUE. . .you learn to move your weight slightly forward to the inside of your LEFT leg (instead of sliding to the right during the takeaway).  Immediately you’re in the perfect spot to apply all the force you need to the golf ball.  There’s no sliding back.  The idea is to make it easier for any golfer to learn how to apply force to the golf ball.  This whole process is made even easier yet by learning how to separate your hands.

By separating your hands. . .your grip is much more powerful.  You can wield the club.  LIke the sword fighter in the INTRO VIDEO. . .learning how to wield every club in your bag is mandatory if you want to score lower.  If you want to end the round with fewer strokes.  O. . .and when you learn to hit down on the ball. . .coming up on a partially buried ball. . .or plugged in the bunker. . .is just another shot.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Loosey-Goosey or the ‘GOOSE?’ Learn a Tight Effective Power Swing!

I watch the average golfer's swing. . .and cringe.  I mean my muscles tighten up and I want to scream.  The conventional swing has too many parts.  So. . .it produces one loosey-goosey swing after another.  This kind of swing is guaranteed to kill the round.  Inconsistency is built-in.  Not so with the MONGOOSE GOLF SWING.
The ‘GOOSE’ is a top down swing that is not hard to learn.  If you’ve ever chopped wood with a hand axe. . .or worked with a hoe. . .you understand the principle of levering your body into the work at hand.  You can’t swing an axe hard with your arms.  You have to get your upper body into the act.
The ‘GOOSE’ features the same [separated hands] technique you need to swing an axe hard into the wood.  The separation of your hands has each of them doing different things. . .but cooperatively. . .exactly like a juggler.  The second one hand touches another. . .even slightly such as in the lapping over of a single finger. . . the brain struggles to know what you want to do with BOTH of your hands.
SIMPLE TEST
Take a mid iron.  Sit down somewhere.  Now. . .if you’re right-handed. . .keep one hand near the end of the grip. . .while putting your left hand away from your right hand about 4 or 5 inches (reverse this if your a lefty).  Now move it vigorously in the air.  Back and forth.  Side to side.  You’ll note you can easily wield the club.  The ability to wield every club. . .including the longest clubs in your bag. . .is critical to how effective you can be using them to strike the golf ball.

When you can wield the clubs. . .you’re now ready to get rid of the infamous TAKEAWAY.  The takeaway moves you away from the ball.  You need to move toward the ball as you lift the club into position.  Watch the INTRO VIDEO.  You’ll see that it’s not hard to learn a much tighter. . .more effective. . .power swing.  I don’t care if you’re 8 or 80.  When I say MORE POWER. . .LESS EFFORT. . .that’s not hype.  That’s a fact.  People all over the world have learned the ‘GOOSE.’

To ORDER the ‘GOOSE’. . .simply click on the BUY NOW button in the right column.  Get your own 33 minutes of ARRRR! video tutorial DVD. . .lots of slow motion. . .which makes it much easier to grasp the elements of the swing. . .lots of explanations.  When you click on the BUY NOW button you’ll be taken to PayPal.  If you DON”T have an account with them. . .NO problem. . .you can use their online banking services anyway. . .Simply click on the link “Don’t have a PayPal account” and you’ll be taken to a page where you can fill out the simple form. . .your credit card info. . .etc. . .and you’re done.  Again. . .if you’re in the Western hemisphere. . .use the winter to learn a new golf swing.  You’re going to love it.  MORE POWER. . .LESS EFFORT!!

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Ball Placement. . .Where’s Your Head? Or Where Should it Be?

You always want your head slightly in front of the ball. . .as the club impacts the ball.  As I developed my swing. . .THE MONGOOSE GOLF SWING. . .I asked myself. . .where are we supposed to have our bodies when the club impacts the ball?  The answer: slightly in FRONT of the ball.  Hmm.  Why is it then that most golfers are behind. . .in most cases  . . .way behind?  Simple. . .they take the club away from the ball   . . .and in the process find their body way over here.  Now.  How do we get our body back over the ball. . .ideally slightly in front of the ball. . .from way over here?  The answer: we don’t.  Why?

Because in addition to getting the club up to a position that allows us to apply force to the ball. . .we have to kind of slide over to that perfect spot. . .with the exact rhythm needed to have our bodies in the perfect position when we apply force to the ball.  Every pro struggles with this.  Did I mention EVERY PRO?
HOW TO HAVE YOUR BODY IN THE PERFECT SPOT TO APPLY POWER. . . FOR EVERY SHOT

With the ‘GOOSE’. . .you don’t move away from the ball. . .you move OVER the ball.  If you’re right-handed. . .you don’t move to the right. . .you move slightly to the LEFT. . .just over the inside of your LEFT leg.  This is where you must have your body to apply the most force to the ball and still remain in balance.  If you watch the INTRO video. . .you’ll notice that my movement to the left is slight.  As I lift the club. . .I move right over to that perfect spot.  I don’t have to get back to it.  I’m there!  This is an astonishing feeling.  At first. . .you can’t believe you did it.

After so many years of doing something a certain way. . .well. . .this all might seem a bit strange.  And it is.  But if you want to really strike the golf ball. . .the 'GOOSE' is the answer.

And when you bring your entire upper body down to the ball and around into a full finish. . .your head is slightly in front of the ball at impact. . .and you’re in perfect balance.  And you can do this shot after shot after shot.  Want to improve your confidence in your ability to execute shots. . .pick up my 33 minutes of ARRRR! video tutorial.  It doesn’t matter that its winter in this hemisphere.  Use the bad days to learn a totally new gold swing.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: How to Swing Slower and Hit it Farther. . .Much Farther

No one can look a physicist in the eye and tell him you can smash a golf ball without a lot of club head speed.  Obviously. . .you need to generate club head speed to put a THWACK! on a golf ball.  But the question has not been settled. . . HOW?  Which brings us to my post today.  Look. . .I’m trying to hustle my MONGOOSE GOLF SWING VIDEO TUTORIAL.  33 Minutes of ARRRRH!  I confess.  But it’s really a better golf swing than the one you’ve been taught. . .so I keep clawing at the door of your resistance to the genuinely new.

If you’ve ever used an axe to cut or split wood. . .(please say you have). . .then you know you don’t swing hard at the wood from the top.  It’s a timed thing.  You start the axe toward the wood. . .slowly. . .and as you get right to the wood. . .your lead hand (recall your hands are separated so you can wield the axe). . .deliberately accelerates right at impact.  Now. . .we both know that our brain is way ahead of us and we actually start accelerating the axe head about half way down. . .but you get my point.  The correct swinging of an axe is a timed thing.

The reason is that you want the most force to START at the ball and continue onward as far as possible.  If you’re falling a tree. . .you want to take out as big a gouge as possible. . .with every THWACK!
I start my swing downward quite slowly and try to be as smooth as possible.  If you watch the ‘GOOSE’ Intro Video. . .you can see that I try to have a smooth swing. . .until I’m right at the ball and then I try and push my left hand (because I’m left-handed. . .you’d do it with your right hand) t-h-r-o-u-g-h as if I’m going to encounter a concrete block that has to be pushed forward about 20 feet.  I hit down on the back of the ball. . .just slightly above the equator (as if a line were drawn around the center of the ball). . .but I also want to use the ground. . .as part of the shot (except on tee shots).  The idea is to compress the ball so as to effect its flight. . .its trajectory. . .its distance.  The average golfer tries to either sweep the ball off the fairway. . .as if it were a carpet. . .or he even tries to hit up into the ball. . .which causes any number of problems.  All of that goes away with the ‘GOOSE.’
If you DON”T have an account with them. . .NO problem. . .you can use their services anyway. . .Simply click on the link “Don’t have a PayPal account” and you’ll be taken to a page where you can fill out the simple form - your credit card info, etc. - and you’re done.  Have a great fall at the course.  Don't wait for summer to start learning the 'GOOSE.'  You're going to love the fact that you can put some serious force to a golf ball.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Lower Your Scores. Leave Your Ego Home. Manage Each Round With a Deliberate Plan

A non-golfing scientist once looked at a golf course and remarked. . .”Obviously the object is to keep the ball on the shortest grass possible. . .”  I will go for weeks without playing.  Right now I’m finishing up 3 books.  Then I go play a round and score a 74.  My playing partners play at least twice a week.  They don’t exactly shun me. . .but the mood gets cool in the clubhouse over a beer after 18 holes.
I can understand the macho element of golf.  There are guys who want to hit driver 400 yards.  They drive par 4s.  Then 3 putt. . .or worse.  I hit my driver about 260 now.  I can hit it farther. . .even at 77.  But if you do the math. . .most of the holes are par 4s that average around 400 yards.  On a few holes. . .I may want to hit an iron. . .simply to keep the ball in play.  Some holes you play for a bogey.  What!  That’s right.  There are two courses here in the greater Vancouver, WA area that have a par 4 that I deliberately play to score a bogey 5.  Why?  Because of the way it’s laid out. . .at about 250 yards off the tee. . .they narrow considerably as they dog leg to the left.  One hole is 365 yards. . .and the other is 410.  I hit short of the dog leg on both holes.  If I hit it to the left side. . .sometimes I have to go over the trees with a 5 or 6 iron.  Which is not that difficult a shot.  You can see the hole through the trees. . .so alignment isn’t a big deal.  But if you hit it through the dog leg. . .to the right. . .which many of my playing partners consistently do. . .now you have an almost certain bogey. . .or worse.

You can’t hit the ball over the trees. . .because you’re in the trees.  You have to waste a shot by pitching out to the fairway.  Now you’re hitting 3.  Each of the holes is well bunkered.  Both sides. . .and a long thin one on the back.  I’ve seen my playing partners. . .all play under a 12 handicap. . .take 6 and even 7 on these holes.  I don’t try for the green. . .from behind the trees. . .but deliberately hit short to set up my third shot.  Then I plan on two putting for 5.  I’ve parred the hole several times. . .but that wasn’t how I deliberately played the hole.  I simply made a putt for par.
EGO BALL IS DUMB

I’ve played lots of golf with people who have to hit every shot as hard as they can. . .except their putts. . .which are almost always short.  Strange.  I crush my putts. . .trying to hit them 4 or 5 feet past the hole.  Yet I have no problem at all playing short on the fairway.  The grip it and rip it bunch get their joy out of crushing a drive.  I get mine out of the final score.  I get mine my how well I navigate the round.  To me. . .it’s all about scoring as low as I can.  I ask myself. . . what is the best way to play this hole?. . .before ever selecting a club.

TRANSFERRING WEIGHT IS THE PROBLEM --- NOT A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM --- OF CREATING A CONSISTENT GOLF SWING

There’s a kind of nonchalance built into the conventional golf swing.  Imagine 4 “gentlemen” or “gentlewomen” heading out to the cow pasture for a little “pasture pool” (which is where it originated and acquired that moniker).  No one intended to work up a sweat.  They may have had a few modest wagers on the round. . .but everything about the game of golf was intended to be just another pastime for those bored out of their skulls with their day.

Today. . .we want to launch the ball into orbit.  And when we get into our forties and fifties and sixties and seventies and eighties. . .and the muscles are shrinking and the bones are brittle. . .well. . .many of us pay a price for all the long drives of our youth.  The ‘GOOSE’ is a swing intended to make it easier to apply power with less effort.  It’s an upper body swing. . .that eliminates the takeaway. . .the old weight transfer. . .and replaces it with something as simple as merely lifting the club into position.  Watch the intro video. . .the bridge lift. . .and the engineering principle of counterbalancing the lifting effort.

If we just used a single club for a whole round. . .we could master the amount of weight transfer and become consistent with our shots.  But we not only use several different clubs during a round. . .but we apply different amounts of power to many different shots. . .right?  We hit a pretty good drive. . .then a bad iron.  We struggle for consistency.  And we struggle to apply the right amount of power to a given shot.  And we do this throughout every round we play.

I learned years ago that the body has billions of memory cells scattered about.  They’re not all in the brain.  There are neurons in our gut. . .down our spine. . .etc.  Reason this out. . .if we can get more of those powerful cells involved in our golf swing. . .shouldn’t that help us perform better?  Yes. . .say the new scientists involved with biophysics.  These people have helped thousands of professionals throw a baseball more efficiently. . .throw harder by levering their bodies more effectively.  And they’ve helped runners run faster. . .basketball players to shoot more consistently. . .etc.  I used a number of their ideas in the development of the ‘GOOSE.’

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: The Long Putter Advantages

I was going to link up with a maker of long putters.  I balked because he advocates face-on putting.  It’s not a bad technique. . .for putts up to say 15 feet or so.  But when you have a 25 or 30 footer. . .there are problems.  You have to make an adjustment in technique for the longer putts.  Every golfer knows that you have to make adjustments for longer putts. . .with all of the technique now being taught.  Everyone also knows that the second we alter our technique. . .we lose the feel we had with the first technique.  Well. . .if you take the putter back with your arms and hands. . .and then hit the putt WITH YOUR BODY. . .you don’t have to make any adjustments.  How hard you hit the ball is based on body-feel. . .not the feel in your arm and hand. . .just like with my full golf swing (the MONGOOSE GOLF SWING).  You can hit 2 foot putts or 125 foot putts with the same technique.
Tom Kite

Again. . .how hard you hit the ball is based on feel.  The problem is as one tires or is put under extreme stress. . .such as in tournaments or from normal aging. . .the feel of how hard to hit the ball breaks down.  Not so. . .if you’re body gets in the act.  As with my golf swing. . . also with my putting technique. . .numberless billions of nerve cells are introduced into the technique. . .through your body.  You hold the long putter like a broom. . .not against your belly. . .which I find puts all the feel into the hands. . .which as I just related break down in feel under stress or fatigue.  Take the club back as if you’re sweeping the floor. . .no more than a few inches for most putts up to 20 feet. . .and tap it. . .again tap it. . .WITH THE SIDE OF YOUR BODY.
What is critical is keeping your eye on the ball.  Once you’ve selected your line. . .(always allow more than you originally thought on putts from 10-50 feet). . .never look at the line again. . .concentrate on the back of the golf ball and tap it with your body.  if they go 10 feet past at first. . .you’re doing well.  You’ll not believe how quickly your body “gets it.”
We know now that we store memory all over our bodies.  We don’t know how it’s done. . .but we know that our leg begins to come to terms with how to kick a ball. . .or our feet come to terms with how to kick while we’re swimming. . .etc.  Muscle memory is  a legitimate term used by sports trainers.  I would add the phrase. . .”BODY MEMORY.”  I’ve proven to myself that I have a great deal of body memory for my golf swing and for my putting technique.  And I’ve proven it doesn’t go away or get sluggish when I’m tired.

Too much feel needed in right hand

I’ve learned to rely on it. . .putting has always been the real strength of my game. . .the way I’ve shot good scores all my life.  The same goes for Adam Scott and the new kid who just won with the long putter.  I highly recommend my putting technique.  Again. . .hold the long putter as if you're sweeping the floor. . .take the putter back with your lower hand. . .and hit it with the side of your body.  The right side if you're right handed. . .the left side if you're left handed.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Why the Conventional Swing Breaks Down. . .Under Pressure and 'GOOSE' Doesn't

I’ve now played golf for more than 60 years.  Thousands of rounds.  Played with a number of touring pros.  Played with a number of club pros.  And. . .of course. . . played with many other types of golfers.  One observation looms. . .their swings break down as the round progresses.  Why?
Let’s take the PGA Championship that was just played over the weekend (August 2011).  Each day the scores mushroomed on the back nine.  Now. . .in all fairness. . . there were some tough holes. . .water here and there. . .but on Sunday. . .following the leaders along through the back nine. . .all of them made horrific mistakes.  Why?  Their swing efficiency broke down.  The world’s number one. . .two. . .three. . .and on down the chart. . .hit into the water. . .in most cases it didn’t trickle in. . .it was bombed into the water.

In a tournament where everyone is within a couple of shots. . .to hit the ball into the water is simply a catastrophe without an excuse. . .except the players are playing with a swing technique that was never intended to be stressed to the point it has been so in the last two decades.  The modern equipment. . .with the massive heads on driver. . .all the different shaft flexibilities. . .etc. . .exaggerates all the error built into the ancient conventional swing.  Most notably the takeaway and the steady rhythm needed to hold it together under pressure.
What does this have to do with the casual golfer. . .the once-a-weeker?  Everything!  Every golfer wants to post a decent score.  The pros can lose tournaments and still make a lot of money.  The young man who won the PGA was a 25 year old rookie.  It was the second tournament he’d won this year. . .and the second he’d won in a playoff.  Each by one stroke.  So a single stroke is often the difference between winning and losing.  But the weekend player wants to post a decent score for the sheer joy of scoring. . .of managing his swing well enough to score.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Left Hand Stays in Front of right hand. . . Until You Make Contact With the Golf Ball

I’ve had several requests to explain in more depth something that happens in my video MONGOOSE GOLF SWING tutorial. . .”Keep your left hand in front of your right hand. . .or lower hand (if you’re right-handed). . .until you make contact with the golf ball.”  One viewer wrote. . .”I tried this again and again and still can’t pull it off. Would you explain in more detail how to do this?”

Okay. . .first of all. . .if you’re using the conventional swing technique. . .the one we’ve all been taught. . .the tendency is to transfer too much weight to the right side (if you’re right-handed). . .which makes it difficult to get back over the ball and into position to apply the necessary force to execute a shot.  95% of golfers. . .male and female. . .are out of position while trying to apply force to a given shot.  What this does is turn a 6 iron into a 9 iron result.  The blade slips under the ball. . .or skulls it.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Moneyball & the Mongoose

The book. . .Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game.. .about a young kid who - knowing almost nothing about baseball - introduces a new idea about how to build a team. . .he introduces statistics.  For 150 years. . .baseball had been doing things a certain way. . .and then along comes Billy Beane.  Read on. . .
The author. . .Michael Lewis. . .digs deep into what has become a new method. . .an art. . .even a science. . .of how to manage the game of baseball.  It’s about Billy Beane. . .who was the GM of the Oakland As.  Beane was a major league player. . . of sorts who doesn’t surround himself with the usual guys. . .the ex-ballplayers who sit on the bench. . .etc.  He hires intellectuals. . .who excel at math. . .at stats. . .who believe that the math and science behind baseball was flawed.
What makes this story even more interesting is that the A’s owner isn’t much of a baseball fan. . .but uses it as a business. . .meaning Beane is given a paltry budget by which to build a winning major league team.  Still. . .by using some new theories about how baseball actually works. . .he begins signing lower priced players. . .including a few college kids who meet the math criteria developed by the math wonks.
Well. . .this team. . .for several years wins 100 + games a season. . .wins 20 games in a row with a roster of unknowns. . .but Beane is declared a failure because he doesn’t deliver a pennant.  Beane loathed the magnitude of salaries some of the major leagure’s earned.  “Ridiculous. . .absolutely ridiculous. . .that a relief pitcher could earn $10 million a year.”
The book melts the whole game down to a handful of stats. . .work the stats and you win games.  The Oakland A’s won a lot of games with what were considered by many to be marginal players.  Beane got rid of the conventional scouting tort. . .and focused on stats. . .and other ways to calculate a player’s offensive value.
Everything was opposed to the conventional way of doing baseball.  They actually orchestrated the 2002 draft so as to get a lot of below market players.  When Beane unloaded the “stars” he got all kinds of booty that played into his scheme.
GETTING RID OF THE DROSS CLINGING TO THE CONVENTIONAL GOLF SWING

Well. . .in golf. . .they've been doing things a certain way for over 300 years.  But now we know from all the injuries and inconsistencies exhibited by even the best of the pros. . .that something new is needed.   By getting rid of the takeaway. . .and the need for rhythm. . .along with an vastly improved grip technique that allows even weak-handed players to wield the heaviest of their golf sticks. . .the ‘GOOSE’ really shines.  Check out the archives. . .or at least scroll down the posts. . .the world of golf is changing.  The ‘GOOSE’ may not be moneyball. . .but it’s sure money when you learn to really THWACK the golf ball without ripping up your knees. . .hips. . .and back.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Logic Says Simple is Better

Every golfer graves the skills to repeat a good solid swing.  Pros. . .who’ve dedicated their lives to the game. . .can’t pull it off.  Those that can swing consistently with more consistency. . .and along the way make a lot of short putts. . .win the tournaments.
Note weight on right leg. . .now must shift back

The conventional swing. . .the one we’re all taught. . .all over the world. . .has too many parts to replicate a swing consistently.  The two major issues are the infamous takeaway. . .where a thousand things can and do go wrong. . .and the notion of rhythm to compensate for it.
Sway to one side. . .sway back. . .swat the ball.  Logic screams at us that something is wrong. . .right?  My swing technique gets rid of two major problems. . .immediately: the takeaway and the need for rhythm.  For those reason alone. . .unless you feel it’s over and you’re going to the grave with the swing you have. . .you should give it a try.
TOP DOWN SMACKS OF GOOD LOGIC
Stand over the ball. . .lift the club into position. . .strike down at the ball. . .THWACK!  That’s it. . .including the sound effects.  In every sport. . .we see sports physiologists contributing new ideas about how to throw a baseball. . .a football. . .a shot put. . .you name it.  Runners go to these clinics and practice new techniques. . .and in every case. . .people are getting better results by bringing their motions into harmony with the way the body is designed.
We bend at the waist.  We rotate. . .but not too much.  We can twist our arms. . .but not too far.  We can rotate around our knees. . .but we have to be careful not to compress the knee too much while rotating. . .or it can snap.  This happens in pro basketball far too often.  The sneakers grabs the floor and won’t yield while the player is trying to pivot and something has to give.  Ankles. . .knees. . .hip flexors. . .shoulders. . .all take a beating and too often cause a player to miss games.
I began developing the MONGOOSE GOLF SWING years ago. . .about 15 to be exact.  I shot most of my tutorial in Palm Springs.  I spent too much producing it.  Way too much.  I’ve never gotten my money back selling first VHS copies. . .now DVDs.  But at the time. . .and I still hold strongly to this belief. . .I thought I’d made the most remarkable breakthrough in the history of the golf swing.
Again. . .weight is on right leg. . .must now get back

It consists of THREE basic principles. . .the counterbalancing technique. . .which eliminates the takeaway and the need for a rhythmic swing. . .the levering action inherent in the upper body. . .we bend naturally at the waist. . .and the unique separating of the hands grip. . .which lets even those with weaker hands to wield the club. . .much like a Samurai swordsman. . .which helps produce significant club head speed. . .with less effort.

PUTTING TECHNIQUE OVERHAUL: The Advantages of the Long Putter Continue

In a recent PUTTING TECHNIQUE OVERHAUL. . .I show a little girl holding a broom.  The idea is to hold the long putter as if it were a broom.  Now in the video abive. . .this man advocates touching the top of the putter against the shoulder.  All of these ideas are to produce a more stable setup. . .which of course effects the results.  You can see he's using the strength of his arms to accelerate the putter.  This is more obvious if you observe his practice tip of simply pushing the ball to the hole.

YOUR BODY REMEMBERS BETTER THAN YOU DO

I advocate using the body to apply the force.  This man is perfectly correct in using a very short takeaway for most putts. . .and then accelerating through the putt.  I have proven that this is much easier using our body than our arms and shoulders.  And it's far more consistent as a round progresses.

In the previous post I mentioned that you take the putter back with your arms and shoulders. . .but that you contract the muscles of your body. . .on the right side (for right-handers. . .reversed for lefties). . .and then use your body to apply the required force to the ball.  It's a short move. . .even for 50 footers.

What I neglected to include was this tip:. . .you can begin contracting your body muscles as you begin taking the putter away from the ball.  Again. . .you're not preparing to throw the shot put. . .or some heavy weight.  So don't over due the muscle contracting.  You're merely preparing to apply whatever force your body deems necessary (and it will learn faster than you) to the ball to get it at least a couple of feet past the hole (see other posts about putting management).

PUTTING TECHNIQUE OVERHAUL: Getting Our Body Much Much More Into the Act

I’ve been asked in several emails if I would explain in more details my technique of getting our body more involved in putting.
In the Mongoose Golf Swing. . .You merely lift the club into position. . .thus eliminating the many horrors that originate in the infamous “takeaway.”  Well  . . .something similar. . .although in reverse. . .happens when people come back to the ball while putting.
We take our grip on the putter. . . always a mystery to the majority of golfers . . .address the ball (after deciding the so-called “line”). . .rotate our shoulders to take the club away. . .then rotate them back. . .making contact with the ball and finish.
Back to the Mongoose Golf Swing. . .once we’ve got the club in position. . .by merely lifting it up. . .we now contract the muscles of our right shoulder. . .arm  . . .and hip (if we’re left-handed it’s the left side). . .which prepares us to strike down at the ball and up into a finish as we rotate around.

Contracting the muscles helps us change directions. . .and prepares the whole upper body for action.  This is the most powerful method of striking a golf ball possible, period!  So I pitch the “More Power, Less Effort” phrase as pure fact.
The same goes for putting.  We take the club away from the ball with our hands and shoulders. . .but then we have to change directions to come back to the ball and apply the exact amount of force we need to get the ball to the hole (I recommend the thought of hitting it past the hole. . .which I’ve already written about: see Archives).

To achieve this is a much more controlled way. . .I recommend contracting the muscles of the entire right side of your body (left side for lefties like me). . .and using the body to make contact with the ball.  Why?  Having demonstrated this a thousand times and then some. . .over the years. . .people are astonished at how much more FEEL they have in their bodies over their shoulders and hands.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: The Structure of the Spine and the Mongoose Golf Swing

Pulled muscles eliminated

If you take even a brief look at the spine. . .made up of individual vertebrae. . .running north and south. . .that should tell us something.  If, as with the conventional golf swing. . .the one we've all been taught, we're required to move east and west, while at the same time yanking it around. . .there just might be a conflict along the way. . .along with some serious consequences.
Here's the problem: with the conventional swing technique, we both compress the spine. . .forcing the vertebrae together
. . .while at the same time twisting the spine around it's axis. . .this can and does produce an over-torquing of the spine and leads to a raft of very sore backs.  Actually, the swing as described above has ended golf for numberless millions of people around the world.  Most notably from what is termed "bulging discs."
KNEES, HIPS, LOWER BACK PROBLEMS
To add to the problems of over-torquing. . .when you overswing in order to apply as much force to the golf ball as possible, you also twist and compress your knees. . . jam down the hips. . .and cause all sorts of woes for the lower back by pulling and compressing on the wrapped muscle groups that hold the lower body together.
Right leg RELEASES fully at impact

Now, let's take a slow look at the MONGOOSE GOLF SWING technique.  What's radically different. . .and beneficial to the body. . .is the fact that you tend to keep the spine action north and south throughout the swing.  Being a TOP-DOWN swing. . .it's more like the way a tree-faller applies force with an axe.  He separates his hands so as to wield the axe. . .then levers his body forward and into the tree simultaneously.  The trailing leg (whether left or right-handed) simply goes along for the ride.
Just as the tree fallers' "swing" - if I can call it that for my own purposes - uses the power of the upper body to apply the force. . .and not the legs. . .the legs don't take anywhere near the beating.  Nor the hips.  Nor the lower back.  I have a friend who fell timber well into his 70s.  He's now 89 and still going strong.
BULLETPROOF UNTIL THE WOUND BLEEDS
You young golfers are saying. . .well, that might work for old guys. . .but I've been doing this pretty well for a number of years. . .and I don't intend to switch now.  I understand.  You're now bulletproof.  But one day. . .sooner than you might think. . .the wounds you're now inflicting on yourself. . .will begin to bleed. . .in the sense that you'll begin to have pains in places you never dreamed of.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Learn to Swing Within Your Actual Playing Abilities

This may seem obvious. . . but it's far from it to far too many golfers.  Most golfers want to play and score like the professionals who work at it everyday.  They want to knock the cover off the ball. . . blast it into the clouds.  And few of these golfers score well.  They're always in trouble (off the fairway in the rough, or in a bunker, or in another fairway).
When a professional takes time off from practicing, you’d be astonished at how long it takes them to get back their mojo.  I've known many pro golfers.  Played many rounds with the great Buddy Sullivan. . . among many very good club pros. . . and they struggle mightily to feel right over the golf ball after a layoff of even a week or two.  How often do you play?

Here's my recommendation: DON'T SWING FOR THE FENCES!  Swing within yourself; within your own abilities.  I know lots of golfers who swing very lightly at the ball and score surprisingly well (several of them have learned the 'GOOSE.')  I know a man and wife who play about three times a week - rain or shine (I live in Vancouver, WA, and it rains here a lot).  She consistently outscores him - and he, though playing from the back tees, always out drives her.

She plays within her abilities.  But she plays well while playing within her abilities.  She plans her shots.  She plays within herself to the point where she's perfectly happy to take three shots to get in position to hit her fourth on par 5s.  She never tries to make up for a bad shot.  Never!
"It's a game to me.  Always has been. . . I love it, but if I don't do particularly well on a given hole, or a given round, I don't get upset about it. . . My strength is my putting.  I nail a lot of one putts - especially after I read Mark's articles on putting with my body instead of my arms. . . I'm getting up there (in age). . . Even though we always use a cart, I still get tired on the back nine. . . So, learning to putt more with my body has really helped."
Finally, Tiger Woods has no idea when he will be back on tour.  He has had four surgeries on his left knee.  He's modified his swing several times (which I admire).  He's now in the process of yet another modification, but cannot practice now because of his injuries.  In my opinion, he's won a lot of tournaments through intimidation.  I think he's intimidated the whole tour for about a decade.  But by over-swinging so many times. . . he may have shortened his career by many years.
In SUMMARY: we've all heard or read that we don't have to swing so hard to get distance.  Well, if you strike the ball correctly using the Mongoose Golf Swing technique, you can generate a lot more power with less effort.  Why?  It's a top down swing. . . and our upper bodies when conjoined with a levering technique can apply an enormous force to the golf ball without putting undue stress (I prefer strain) on our knees, hips, and lower back.  With the 'GOOSE' swing, the knees, hips, and lower back, just go along for the ride.  They're completely released BEFORE your club head meets up with the ball.
To verify what I'm saying here. . . please take a look at the DEMO VIDEO.  You'll notice that my trailing leg is completely released.  Thus, the amount of strain or torque on the knees, hips, and lower back, is significantly reduced.  Also, it's much easier on the neck.  Many golfers (including many pros) suffer from neck stress due to over-swinging.

GOLF SWING OVERHAUL: Do NOT Hold Your Head Still!

“Hold your head still” cry the pro instructors.  “Keep it steady.”  “You muffed that shot because you moved your head.”  These guys are telling you the same crap handed down for the last 200 years.  No one has thought this notion of holding your head still during the golf swing all-the-way-through.  If they did - they’d realize you CAN’T hold your head still.  Why?  Because it’s attached to your body and your body is moving.
"This is INSANE!!!"

So, what are they really trying to get you to do?  Keep your eye on the ball.  But watch an ordinary hitter in baseball. . .the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand and as it travels to the plate. . .the hitter keeps his eyes on the ball. . .he doesn’t keep his head still.  In fact, if you kept your head still, you couldn’t hit a baseball for beans.  Try it.  Imagine it.
Now - you CAN hold your body still.  Just look at a mime.  They discipline themselves to remain still for hours.  Amazing.  But put a golf club in their hands and ask them to hold their head still while swinging it and they’ll look at you as if you were just released from the funny farm.
Eyes on ball. . .head moves freely

With the MONGOOSE GOLF SWING - you don’t have to worry about holding your head still because you’re not swaying to one side only to have to sway back over to the other side.  No takeaway, no backswing.  You DO have to think about keeping your eyes on the golf ball.  How else is your brain going to know how to help you hit the bloody thing?
The GOOSE’ is a top down swing.  As little BODY movement as possible is its main advantage.  You’re striking down at the ball and not trying to sweep it or even worse hitting up into it (very hard on the knees, hips, and lower back, because of over-torquing).
One more time: DO NOT TRY TO KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL.  KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE BALL. . .and let your head do whatever it needs to do to achieve that.  A minutes practice with the advise of keeping your eyes on the ball. . .while letting your head be free to move any which way it needs to to accomplish that. . .and, well, you’re going to love the new freedom.
To ORDER the ‘GOOSE’ - simply click on the BUY NOW button in the right column.  Get your own 33 minutes of ARRRR! video tutorial DVD. . .lots of slow motion, which makes it much easier to grasp the elements of the swing. . .lots of explanations.  When you click on the BUY NOW button you’ll be taken to PayPal.  If you DON”T have an account with them. . .no problem. . .you can use their services anyway. . .Simply click on the link “Don’t have a PayPal account” and you’ll be taken to a page where you can fill out the simple form - your credit card info, etc. - and you’re done.  Have a great summer
